![]() ![]() As if pirates, romance, and sword-wielding ladies weren’t enough to get you to pick up this book, here are five reasons why Curacao is the ultimate destination for, well, everyone…and why I spent the past few days hooked in this book, relentlessly rooting for Anne Barrett to get back to the land where her mother was born. ![]() So when I realized there was a kickass female protagonist named Anne in Blackhearts, I was hooked.Īnne finds herself traveling (of her own choice or is she forced? We’ll give no spoilers) from Europe to Curacao, an island I believe is one of the most incredible places in the world. There was something about a badass piratical Gina Davis that I couldn’t get enough of. Now, while I’m a big fan of the typical pirate archetype, I have to admit I grew up watching Cutthroat Island pretty much weekly. In Blackhearts, Castroman reimagines the origins of the notorious Blackbeard, complete with romance, fight scenes, and of course, pirates. If you’re unfamiliar with Blackhearts and Blacksouls by Nicole Castroman, it’s time to drop what you’re doing and pick up your two next great adventure books. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now, in the first intimate behind-the-scenes account of life with the ravens of the Tower, the Ravenmaster himself shares the folklore, history and superstitions surrounding both the birds and their home. They are not the easiest of charges – as he reveals, they are much given to mischief, and their escapades have often led him into unlikely, and sometimes even undignified, situations. ![]() Over the years in which he has cared for the physical and mental well-being of these remarkable birds, Christopher Skaife has come to know them like no one else. The current holder of the position is Yeoman Warder Christopher Skaife, and in this fascinating, entertaining and touching book he memorably describes the ravens’ formidable intelligence, their idiosyncrasies and their occasionally wicked sense of humour. One man is personally responsible for ensuring that such a disaster never comes to pass – the Ravenmaster. But their role is even more important than that – legend has it that if the ravens should ever leave, the Tower will crumble into dust, and great harm will befall the kingdom. Each year they are seen by millions of visitors, and they have become as integral a part of the Tower as its ancient stones themselves. ![]() ![]() For centuries, the Tower of London has been home to a group of famous avian residents: the ravens. ![]() ![]() ![]() The front wheel is shallower to help improve handling on windy days.īikeRadar testers (myself included) have had positive experiences with such a design on Roval’s Rapide CL II and Rapide CLX II wheels, as well as Parcours’ Strade wheelset. ![]() ![]() The theory goes that because it’s less ‘vulnerable’ to crosswinds, the rear wheel can be deeper and therefore more aerodynamically optimised. The rims follow a mullet principle – a deeper 55mm profile at the rear is paired with a 49mm-deep rim at the front. ENVE claims it best hits the sweetspot between aerodynamic performance and stability, weight and versatility for fast road riding.ĮNVE says it tests its wheelsets at the industry-ballpark 30mph/48kph, plus at 20mph/32kph – all the better, it claims, to optimise for the speeds people actually ride at. The 4.5 on test here sits in the middle ground, slightly deeper, but heavier, than the 3.4. The range comprises four wheelsets: from the shallowest, lightest 2.3, up to the deepest, most aerodynamic 6.7. The ENVE SES range was updated in mid-2022, simplifying the brand’s top-tier line-up compared to previous generations. ![]() The SES 4.5’s internal rim width is a whopping 25mm. ![]() ![]() ![]() John continues his controlling and abusive behavior.
